ALL HALLOWS IMPROV SCARYTELLING II: A Virtual Celebration of NOT BURIED DEEP ENOUGH by Gary Robbe

October is a sacred month for dark fiction readers and writers alike. On Sunday, October 1 at 5 p.m. (MT), Denver Horror Collective is petrified to present the return of ALL HALLOWS IMPROV SCARYTELLING, our virtual horror storytelling event sure to disturb and unnerve anyone misfortunate enough to attend.

It’s also the launch of NOT BURIED DEEP ENOUGH, the debut short story collection by Gary Robbe, published by DHC!

In ALL HALLOWS IMPROV SCARYTELLING Colorado writers Gary Robbe, Zak Hennessey, Shannon Lawrence, Thomas C. Mavroudis, and Marissa Yarrow will exhibit their dark arts by prompting the first line of a tale from one of five subgenres—folk horror, haunted house, weird western, war story, dark fantasy—and attendees will help spin out the yarn on the spot, sentence by sentence (virtual guests are invited—though NOT required—to join in on the fun/fear)!

RSVP for Zoom link today at submissions [at] denverhorror [dot] com.

Horror Book Club—FIREFLY RAIN by Richard Dansky

For May, The Thing in the Labyrinth horror book club is reading Richard Dansky’s horror novel, Firefly Rain. When Jacob left home for a new life, he pretty much forgot all about Maryfield, North Carolina. But Maryfield never forgot him. Or forgave him. You can purchase a copy of the book here.

The club will hold a discussion on Sunday, May 28, at 8:30 pm Mountain. This free, online event will take place via Zoom with a run time of 90 minutes. To sign up, please email the moderator, A.E. Santana. A Zoom link will be sent to participants closer to the event date. To keep up to date with The Thing in the Labyrinth book club, sign up for the newsletter here.

Please note that club sessions will be recorded and made available to The Thing in the Labyrinth and DHC members through private Facebook channels.

Denver Horror Collective partners with virtual horror book club

The new year brings new ways to enjoy horror, including a partnership between Denver Horror Collective and The Thing in the Labyrinth horror book club. The collaboration between the two will be official in January 2023, introducing DHC members and fans to the monthly virtual book club that centers its reads on horror – novels, novellas, poetry, and more. In January, the short story horror collection, The Emaciated Man and Other Terrifying Tales from Poe Middle School, by Evan Baughfman will be discussed.

In 2018, the well-known and Instagram famous The Last Bookstore in Los Angeles, Calif. launched The Thing in the Labyrinth horror book club hosted by horror author Kathryn E. McGee. When the pandemic hit, the book club (like so many other events) went online, where it gained a larger audience from across the U.S. During this time, the book club changed hands and hosts to horror author A.E. Santana who continues the club in a virtual space. To view previous books read under McGee, see here. To view previous books read under Santanta, see here.

In partnership with DHC, The Thing in the Labyrinth will continue virtually via Zoom and take place on the fourth Sunday of every month at 8:30 pm MT. During November and December, The Thing in the Labyrinth presents the short story special event with flexible dates and times due to the rush of the season. For upcoming book club meeting information, including registration info, please sign up for The Thing in the Labyrinth’s newsletter here.

On Sunday, January 22, at 8:30 pm MT, The Thing in the Labyrinth will be discussing the short story horror collection The Emaciated Man and Other Terrifying Tales from Poe Middle School by Evan Baughfman. A great collection for younger or adult readers, these 15 stories are a perfect mix of spooky and middle school antics. Readers may purchase a copy here.

Hope to see you there!

“Cheesman Park Haunted Tour” with Magpie Paranormal

DHC was lucky enough to go on an endarkening ghost tour of Cheesman Park and its surrounding neighborhoods, considered by nearly all accounts to be the most haunted—and genuinely disturbing—spot in Denver.

Magpie Paranormal presented the two-hour walking tour lead by historian and paranormal specialist Sam Carstens and Karen Magpie. We won’t give too much away—we encourage you to take the tour yourself for only $25—but we’ll share a few tidbits.
